When I updated the classifications for our USPSA match this past weekend, all of the non-members were changed from U to nothing. The classification field for each of these competitors was blank. I had to manually update them to U. These competitors should be grouped with all other Unclassified competitors in the same match/division/category etc. Otherwise, the classification update seemed to work correctly.
If you want to use a self-declared classification then you should not use uspsa classification update option. For the uspsa one a non member cannot have class. Neither an expired member.
For majors (and I do it for locals), we do update classifications and then search for noclass, nomemberid, and classx. This helps weed out people that do not have valid member numbers, no member number, and expired numbers respectively. If U was returned it would be more difficult to find the member numbers that need to be fixed ahead of the match.
