Pushing back on device approves scores

Pushing the back button the device when the score data is fully entered will mark the score as complete if you back up during the review phase and click “save and exit” without the competitor pushing Approve and there seems to be no indication in the results as it not having been approved. If the score data is incomplete, it is not an issue. Yes the RO is “saving” on purpose but it does not mean it was approved or is actually complete.

If I edit a score and do a correction and back out with a save, its also marked as approved.

It would be nice if the record was somehow marked dirty and either flagged in red or something other than green. It’s happened a few times when something has come up and the stage is getting scored but something has come up and required moving to the next shooter but we don’t want to lose the as-shot content for the previous competitor. Like during a pulled target for RM scoring call.

USPSA requires a competitor to push approve which acknowledges the score has been accepted but it never was approved by him/her.

I updated the app 2 days ago and still see this behavior.

Jason,
This has been like this for quite a while, Approve vs 'save and exit'. Stage staff can still bring up the approve screen and have the shooter approve. At majors, this has been used before when calling the RM and they can’t get there right away. It is marked as approve, but the RM can still interact with the competitor to address the issue while the stage staff runs the stage. My experience is that things get handled before the squad leaves - could be left as is, an edit, re-shoot, etc - depending on the RM guidance and/or the situation. I tested it before, I -think- I remember it sends out a score log on save an exit also if that option is selected.

Thanks Warren.

I guess I’ve never run into it in the past. It seems that not tracking that the competitor pushed approved vs save and exit by the RO may be an easy way to arbitrate a score. I’d think it would be simple to tag the score as complete but unapproved so we can move on to other shooters while disputes play out.

Touching “approve” in the rule book (including in rule 9.7.3) is one of silly things uspsa chose to do instead of doing some proper and verifiable protocol. Basically it’s he said, she said. Not verifiable.

9.7.3 Should a competitor refuse to sign or initial a score sheet, or scoring device for any reason, the matter must be referred to the Range Master. If the Range Master is satisfied that the course of fire has been conducted and scored correctly the unsigned score sheet will be submitted as normal for inclusion in the match scores. The Range Master may touch “approve” to submit the score if necessary.
